Your material-based displacement is only visible at render time. Discover how to convert it into an editable mesh version in this quick YouTube video!

This tip is from CG Cookie's video course "Creating Procedural Sand Dunes in Blender 2.8"

  1. Awesome ! Thanks CG Cookie and Ian Johnson for landing that baking feature !!
This can help bake chocolate micro-displacement fast previews for an online app into 3d printing and identical chocolate mold-making... Preview = reality.

  2. Now we need displacement baking from one object to another. As this feature has not been transferred from 2.7 to 2.8 sadly.

    • A workaround would be to try adding a multiresolution modifier and add a few subdivisions, then add a shrinkwrap modifier and set it to "project" and check "negative". Apply the shrinkwrap modifier, then set the viewport subdivisions of the Multiresolution modifier to 0.
Check "bake from multires" from the bake panel and you can select displacement

      • Thank you, I checked that out, didn't know about that, but it's half useless now as it bakes onto not smoothed uvs, so you will have to use non-smooth (sharp) uvs option. But it's better than nothing.
