Krita is an open source image editor that can also open multilayer exr.
Drawback is that while it uses the opencolorio library, there doesn't appear to be a way to add blenders filmic profiles. Maybe there is a way to put them where they can be found???

If you wish to use krita’s OCIO functionality, and in particular in combination with Blender’s color management, you can try to have it use Blender’s OCIO config.
Blender’s OCIO config is under /version number/datafiles/colormanagement. Set the LUT docker to use the OCIO engine, and select the config from the above path. This will give you blender’s input and screen spaces, but not the looks, as those aren’t supported in Krita yet."

So that is where it is buried, easy to miss when the LUT Management docker is the only place to find that option, should at least go into the main preferences.
Once you show the LUT Management docker, it is easy to select blenders filmic config to use in Krita.
I tried opening it in Krita, and it worked straight away, without playing around with OCIO settings!
Yes it does actually read and use the OCIO colour profile data used when the exr file was saved, which is more than blender does.
Enabling OCIO and loading blender filmic settings does give the ability to view different profiles in Krita. This does end up being less useful than it should as the original colour profile stays with the file, so we can't change the profile that blender saved with it, only preview it differently.
While blender does save the colour profile data, it doesn't read it, saving two render results with different profiles in blender will appear the same when open in blenders image editor, while opening them in krita shows that the profile is saved with the file.
