Alesso - Remedy Music Video created in Blender

6

Brennan Karem writes about the official music video he created for Swedish DJ and producer Alesso, which by now has over 2.2M views!

I got noticed off of my daily renders on Instagram by someone at Shots Studios. Shots manages Alesso, which in turn gave me the opportunity to work on his music videos. I started with creating and directing a music video for Remedy Extended Mix, and now his newest release, “Time”. As of this year I officially work with Shots Studios exclusively.

When I first heard the track for Alesso's "Remedy" I was instantly inspired to create something grand and out of this world...literally. I felt the music and the lyrics pumping through me, so that inspired me to create something that I thought represented how the music made me feel.

The idea that I settled on was about a dying city that is brought back to life by the music, while also mixing in a good robot love story. I've used a few other 3D programs throughout the years as a VFX artist keeping an open mind and never getting too attached to one program. That was of course until I finally found Blender. In the past I never really felt like any of the other software's spoke to me as Blender does. The second I opened up the program it was as if the designers were VFX artists and they were speaking to me. I felt this digital communication between what I wanted and what Blender was providing. It was insane and amazing! I've only been using Blender a year now, and personally I think it has allowed me to create some of the most beautiful images, and tell some of the most beautiful stories.

From concept to final delivery, this project only took me about 12 days. I could never have accomplished that in any other program. I needed to be able to animate characters, build environments, do complex camera moves, and build a huge sci fi city and not have the computer crash or take a year to render. I was able to build and animate everything in blender, do all of my test renders and compositing, and then finally when it was time, I sent everything off to the render farm.

Every 3D artist or VFX artist I meet now, I always recommend Blender. The community, Ton Roosendaal, Andrew Price , the foundation as a whole has completely won me over. Sometimes I start to feel like I've become a fanatic just because of how much I've started to talk about it haha. I've even been inspired to give back to the community and start posting my own tutorials, which I've never considered in the past. I've only been able to post a couple, but hopefully this year there will be plenty more to come!

I learned a lot while making this project. I had never before attempted anything this huge. I wasn't even sure if it was possible at the time for one person on one computer to create an entire four and a half minute video of complete CGI. I learned a lot about render settings, lighting, camera movement, and how to get the most out of blender without the renders costing a fortune or taking a year to finish. I definitely lost a ton of sleep, and every day was approaching a 20 hour day if not longer, but in the end, ultimately Blender helped me create the story that I had in my head and allowed me to share it on screen for everyone to see.

To me, that is the best and most beautiful feeling :)
