Behind the Scenes: Moon Landing

About me

My name is Tamás Török. I'm living in Hungary and I'm working for a company as a 3D generalist. We're making 3D scenes for a digital education system. I was always interested in drawing and about 15 years ago I started to use Blender. I was sure that I want to learn 3D graphics but there wasn't a school nearby where I could learn it so I graduated as an IT engineer but 3D remained a hobby. After school while I was searching for a job I built a 3D portfolio and I got my first job as 3D modeller. I guess I'm better in modeling stuff than programming :D Currently I deal with real time graphics in Unity for a living and make some renders as a hobby if I have time and ideas.

Inspiration

Watching movies, and looking at photos and every kind of graphics are the perfect ways to get ideas, I think. In this case my inspiration came from a blueprint about the moon landing. It was my desktop background for years.

Moon Landing

I was happy with the idea that the model would be simple, with spheres and cylinders so I could build the scene quite fast. As you can see it’s quite low poly and the textures contains the smaller details.

Lighting was a challenge. Actually the final setup was a last minute idea. The previous one was boring and I started to worry about the whole scene. The only thing I was sure of was that I wanted a dark environment with fog.

This is the initial lighting. I almost uploaded it and then I watched a tutorial about volumetric settings and realized: Hey, it’s the lighting I need. It took some time to set it up so that every model got enough light, but it looked better than the previous setup, so I said, “Okay, this is the final one.”

It looked better, but rendering took much longer. I was curious about Blender’s new realtime renderer so I tried it.

Two hours later I could set up almost the same lighting in EEVEE. Here are my settings.

The image rendered in EEVEE was so close to the Cycles’s version that I rendered the final image in EEVEE. Volumetrics and bloom looked so cool that I needed fewer post effects than usual in Photoshop. Due to all of the soft shadows and volumetric lighting it took a few minutes to render it in 4K.

My final conclusion about this project is that EEVEE is amazing :)

  1. Beautiful. Love the detail, mood, and overall storytelling. I think I kind of prefer the lighting in the cycles version, but they are both excellent.
