I have created a group node with animation nodes (v2.1) “Point-Scatter Group Node” for Blender 2.79 and Blender 2.80. This group node scatters points on a given mesh surface and with these points, you easily link objects, e.g., with this node you can scatter trees on a terrain, rocks on a surface or cool motion graphics. Because, this group node is based on animation nodes, therefore you can easily animate those points or linked objects. In this video have shown the possibilities and breakdown of a scene.
