Add-on: Simple Asset Manager

Simple Asset Manager for Blender 2.8. Works with objects, materials, hdr and particle systems.
Did this one due to dealys for internal asset manager for Blender (no rush guys, I get it; you will have more angles to look at the topic).

Made for simplicity of usage (if you have any ideas how to delete some buttons let me know).
None of the mangers I've tried was enough for me. Asset flinger was nice, but the idea with blender previews was much better/simple. Chocofur asset manager is almost perfect, but still, it had its cons: separate spaces for categories, and (i only assume) fixed categories. I'm not a big fan of tabs in Tools ribbon, I needed it to be small.

Focused on simplicity. Less buttons more functionality.

v0.3

  • Dynamic, and custom categories: Except of material, and particle this addon will follow your library layout, folders and subfolders.
  • With Ctrl+scroll over the categories it is even faster.
  • Small and simple UI. Simple, and small to modify code as you like.
  • Opens blend, obj, fbx from the same place.
  • Opens and sets hdr to the world
  • Option to batch render all previews.

  1. This is terrific. So much better than others I've tried.

    What I love:
    1. The structure - it reflects the folder structure you create in windows so it's really easy to re-organise your library
    2. The ability to append the asset or open it's file in a single click
    3. The ability to automatically generate thumbnails for assets that don't have them.
    4. The material library - add or replace materials even into the right slots if your object has multiple materials

What I'd really like to see:
    1. Deeper Sub categories. I'm cataloging thousands of assets. I'd love to have categories within categories within categories. At the moment it only goes 2 deep - Category/Sub-category
    2. The ability to bring single objects into the collection you have selected in outliner. At the moment it creates a collection called assets then a sub collection with the name of your asset. Would like to be able to turn this off. Ideally, I want single objects coming in in your selected collection. An asset with multiple objects should come in to collection you have selected in outliner in its own sub-collection.
    3. Thumbnail window that uses more of your screen space. At the moment I'm limiting folders to 24 assets so I don't have to scroll.
    4. I create all my assets without a material so I can apply it when I bring it in to my scene. This prevents duplicated materials which append always does. Would love to have more colour options when generating thumbnails if the asset has no material - perhaps using matcaps.

Sounds like I'm being critical. I'm not. This is just a wish list which would turn a fantastic tool into a perfect one. Would happily buy this on Blender Market for $30 if it did all this.

    Keep up the great work.

  2. When I click the generate thumbnails button it seems nothing happens other than a collection named Assets appears in the outliner. Not sure if I just need to wait or what as there's no indication of progress. Also I'd love it if there were sub categories.

  3. I've been having same issue. Also, when appending models that aren't in a collection I get error messages and new scenes added to my file. Reported this back some time ago and hoping for a fix.

  4. Must add. I'm using the paid for version which has the extra sub categories. Problems all started with this version.
