2001: A space Odyssey VR experience (Vive)

Hello dear Blenderheads,

over the last few months my student Erika Bonat has developed out of passion 3 environments from Kubrik's masterpiece:

  • the kitchen from Aries 1b shuttle
  • the lobby in Space Station V
  • HAL9000 holographic memory

The models were created in Blender, then we produced a VR experience in UE4, with the help from Ettore Cinquetti, CS student in Verona University.

Now we want to share the result with the Community and with everybody who's interested in cinematography and Kubrik's work.

Here's a video showcasing the environments!

The experience at the moment is Win64 - HTC Vive only, the download link is a the bottom of this page.

Any feedback much appreciated... Enjoy

  1. Hello! This is really beautiful work. What were Erika's sources for some of the set areas not shown on-screen in the film? Although it looks pretty accurate at first, there seem to be some minor differences. The most noticeable from the video is the row of beverage dispensers in the Space Station V lobby - there should be four total (3 Bar, 1 Coffee) instead of five. But again that's minor - overall everything seems right on!

Would it be possible to obtain copies of these models, especially the Space Station V lobby? I've been working on a model of the exterior for several years. It would be interesting to try to fit Erika's interior model into the exterior model, then set the viewpoint to look into a window from the outside. It would only be for personal use - I would not distribute them in any way. Thanks!
