Time of Change (short film)

Felix Wilcken writes:

Hi, I'm Felix, a filmmaker, 3D artist and writer from Germany Today I finished my short film "Time of Change".

In this project I experimented with many different techniques. I mixed film footage, 3D animations, drawings, miniatures and frame by frame animation. For the 3D scenes I used blender (texturing with substance painter).

I enjoyed the process very much and I'm happy to present you guys this project.

    • Thanks, nice to hear! It's a very old tree. The mesh was one of my first things I buil up in 3D. After this he was hidden for 6 years on my harddrive. Godod that he has made it out now :)

  1. Yeah I agree with the other commenters, that was a really good combination/improvisation.
You know some people spend far too much time getting details right rather than telling a story.
I am thinking of Blender Institute movies actually...highly polished but short of content.
This work shows you can have style and substance with economy of effort, al though I suppose it was some work to do. Well done. I would like to see more of your projects. :)

    • I totally agree with you. To be honest I'm also realy good in spending to much time on details :)
I think also that unique style projects fits more to the open philosophy of blender than producing style like the others. But nevertheless I'm of course proud to see that with blender you can do it like commercial companys. Thank you for your exciting comment!
I am confident that I will be able to present another project in two or three weeks.

    • Thank you. Yes, blender for sure. Are you advanced in blender? You can do it easy with a fluidsimulation with collision object and a change of the gravitypoint in your scene settings. But your hardware needs power for this and you need time and nerves :) Maybe I will make a little tutorial nextime.

  2. I really do love the style and kind of storytelling in this short. Really great work.
But i disagree with you concerning the BI Open Movies - which of them ist "short of content? Even compared to this one?
(okay, monkaa comes to my mind. I didn't like it, but wasn't actualy done in BI) Even the first one, elephants dream, can easily mash up with this one in terms of story.

BI Open Movies ARE highly polished, because they have to - they exist to push development targets, and to showcase what blender can do.
There is no way for them to have any excuses for etchnical shortcomings. They have to show the best you can do with blender, technicaly.
That said, it's great they also spend a lot of efforts into their storytelling.

    • Thank you for your praise. Maybe I was a bit careless with my "totally agree". I do not want to give the impression that I dislike Blender movies in any way or that I want to put my little storyline about other projects.

I am very proud if I see the high quality content of current blender projects and I think storytelling is quite good. But. Good is not unique and not courageous. Blender is a great unique project. It is one of the largest OpenSouce projects worldwide. It is a slow but constant revolution in the 3D industry. in the long run I think to blender fits more movies with unique styles and ideas and with a main focus on substance.

At the moment it's probably the right thing to set the focus on showing what the program can do. But styles are getting old. There comes a time when everyone can do amazing styles in realtime :) Ideas will live forever and I hope for many productions the focus will be set much more on ideas and substance than on the visual possibilities.
