Access to 100s of thousands of free to use Creative Commons models with the Sketchfab importer add-on

17

You can now directly search and download hundreds of thousands of Creative Commons models with the new importer addon!

Models can be searched by keyword(s) or browsed. The addon then presents thumbnails of suitable results and each one can be called up on Sketchfab.com for a full 3D preview if desired before downloading directly into Blender.

Materials and textures are loaded in automatically and Cycles node networks are generated so the download is immediately ready to render.

The addon is currently available in Beta and we welcome your feedback on the current build. We have included a “Report an issue” button in the addon and hope you will help us iron out the final few wrinkles. Note that the addon is compatible with Blender 2.79. A version for Blender 2.80 will be released later this year.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. If these are ready to bake and export then we're Going to see a lot of these popping up on virtual markets such as second life :/ Good idea but i feel like it may aid people already stealing from sketchfab

    • It's no different from people offering their work on Blend Swap. This addon will only download Creative Commons licensed models that are already available for download through the website.

  2. It would be nice if the objects were placed in a group (for linking in from another file). It's fairly easy to do so, but automating it would probably be along the intent of this addon. On a sidenote: maybe models on Sketchfab could have an indication of scale, so the imported models can be automatically scaled to match eachother?

    • Yes, we have discussed grouping after import and will probably add that soon. Adding scale is more complicated, it's on our wishlist but not on the roadmap yet.
