You can now get started with the open source photogrammetry tool 'Meshroom' a bit more easily as they're providing binaries for Windows and Linux. Before running, make sure you have Cuda up and running - several steps of the 3D reconstruction process depend on it.
So far, I'm impressed with the results. I ran a simple test through it (see the result below) and compared the output to the commercial PhotoScan PRO and the results were almost identical. Photoscan gives you more control over the output, but Meshroom seems highly flexible and scriptable so perhaps more options will appear later.
