So, what are Matcaps?
MatCaps are, in brief, enhanced materials. It would have taken a lot of node work to obtain e.g. a procedural car paint. And I think it’s a major step forward for Blender.
Matcaps have always been in Blender. And they are in fact, simplified materials with “fake” lighting and speculars, not really enhanced.
