    Amazing..
I was waiting how would that drill.. but that seems real .. is that really a 3D or camera Trick .. :P

modeling is not concern to me at all in this video, but the animation.. the tool nib trimming and grinding or the drill used to spirals metal .... ufffff amaazing.

Would you mind if I ask to know, how did you!!!!

    • Drilling:
The spiral drill chips follow a pair of curve paths, one in each flute of the drill bit. The curves rotate around the spindle axis as the drill advances to keep them aligned with the drill flutes (using a driver). When the chip reaches the end of the curve a rigid body copy of the chip is activated and made visible and at the same time the chips on the curves restart the journey from inside the workpiece. The small drilling chips are just a simple particle system.

      Turning:
There is a single spiral chip attached to the cutting edge of the carbide cutting insert. This chips material has a transparent mask that is animated to make it appear to grow as the carriage advances. A rigid body copy of the chip is activated and made visible as the mask cycles around.

This is not creative... you know!!! I was thinking it's something great...

i was wrong, MAN... this is SUPER Creative, Love it.... , Thank you for the TIPS.. great work.!

  2. Excellent in every way.

Having worked on similar machines, way back in the 70s, the only thing missing is the smell of oil on hot metal!

I'd love to own a decent lathe, but I don't have anywhere I could put one.

yessss. that smell and oil on hot metal!.. I can recall that too.. you know what.. i had also lathed a few "pistol's bullets" for key chain when I was a kid may be.. 20 years back and some cot legs and tops too. this had always been a great experience and those childhood memories.

  3. Awesome animation. The only thing as working as a machinist is that with the drill, it should go in a bit, and then come out a little to break the swarf and then go back in. kinda like a jarring effect.
