What is Open Source Hardware?

A HOOU content production project of public universities in Hamburg.

Was a lot of fun to work on the project. Of course, most of it was created the with the open source program Blender 2.79 (the best program with the best community in the world)

Hope you have the same fun to watch it :)

I’m a 3D Artist focusing on animation. Most of all I like to work with the Open Source Software Blender. For over 10 years I am a professional artist on and behind the stage. My passion besides dancing is creating animated short films. The fascination of movement, telling stories and crossing of borders, is also my biggest motivation.

  1. The production value and the way the message was pushed, visually, is all great.

I think the "open-source good, commercialism and closed-source bad" is a naive message to push as hard as it was though. I think there's room for both and for them to play off each other - companies that can use open source or even contribute to it for their own proprietary interests, or companies that have proprietary tech, but also create and maintain their own open source projects. (It's not a hardware example, but if you don't think Blender doesn't use open source libraries from Disney, Pixar, Sony and ILM - who also have a ton of in-house and proprietary software and would protect those litigiously ...). The one-sidedness is mainly an issue because it looks like a video targeted to people who are completely new to the idea and may have very formative minds about the subject - it's very easy for them to start building a foundation of a close-minded us-vs-them notion.

Anyways, getting hung up on the message and not the graphics - again, visually, I thought it was great!

    • Thank you very much for your feedback. I completely agree with you. My favorite program is Open Source (Blender) but I am very much happy that there exist for example Zbrush or a substance painter as well.
The Video was not made to show what is good and what is bad. The video also doesn’t show that Open Source hardware is the only right way. The Video should do exactly what we are doing right now, we are discussing. It should be food for the thought.
It would be great if there would be at least a choice! Then everyone can decide for themselves they want to buy an open- or nonopen source toaster.

  2. Great video! Some companies cool like Red Hat and Lulzbot create company + community environment. Big problem is corrupt laws, force people respect companies rights with no responsibilities for companies respect people's rights, and big companies use their money buy corrupt laws.

This open content video? Where can download blend files and models?

    • Thank you very much for your feedback. Soon some data and Blend files including the character of the video will be available. I am currently work in on it.

Great concept (open source HW) and nicely executed short. I was always dreaming of being able to 3D print spare parts, having open libraries with blueprints and schematics etc. Imagine how Blender fits into that concept, open source SW to design and print open source HW and spares :)
