Insight - A Game Environment

Auke Huys presents his amazing graduation project, which was entirely modeled in Blender, and animated in Unreal Engine.

Hi guys,

I've finished my work for graduation at school and I thought it'd be nice to share it here. It was done in almost half of a year - from the level design concept, through white blocking and modeling all of the assets and set up the whole scene. It was a great experience and I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Blender was involved into the whole process. First of all I planned with Blender the level design and did a whiteblocking. The environment is intended to be standalone for a fictional game and so it's fully playable. Every wall, every element was placed trough the game and level design loupe. For the ones are really interested going into level design, I can recommend you this , this and this source.

After this design stage was finished, I began to model the whole thing. Every of the 230+ assets first started and ended in Blender. Blender was used to make the base meshes, some highpolys, mesh optimization and for the UV mapping and animation. I used ZBrush for sculpting, Substance Painter and Designer for texturing and Designer for baking.

      To your question - No. This wouldn't be an alternative for me, because I don't have any knowledge about Armory. The problem with Armory and engines like this, there isn't much of documentation. Even for Godot. The user base is pretty small, so it's hard to find help.

      So I decided to choose the Unreal Engine. The community is very large and for me the most important part, it has a visual scripting system. I am no programmer at all, so this was a great opportunity.

      But when you are a programmer, don't mind to use Armory, Godot or Unity or Unreal. Every Engine has it's pros and cons. Unreal for example is pretty bad in 2D games - almost no one would use this engine to make a classic 2d plattformer.

    Great work congratulation !!
    I just want to ask you if you are baked the lighting, if Yes i would to now how you achieve this lovely result
    because i worked on some Archviz projects of mine and i used Blender with Unreal but i get some weird result of baked light nowing that i unwrapped my models proprely and i changed the lightmap setting for the bounce light and the quality.. ( if the lighting is strong, the result is good but in the darkest place, the result is ugly ) .
    I hope finding the answer and thank you in advance
