Would be good to teach how to get clean normals where you've done those boolean operations

did you try and go into edit mode, select everything and hit ctrl-N to recalculate the normals?
haha no I don't mean the normals are flipped, I mean the normals should be controlled as to not create the shading artefacts that that type of topology can create.
I agree. Maintaining good normals is essential to clean and efficient hard surface modeling.
Hi Thomas, that's easy: select all, remove doubles then hit CTRL-N to recalculate normals.
