Blender Foundation YouTube Update

26

While there's no word from YouTube about the problems on the Blender Foundation's (and others!) channels yet, the team is now uploading all their content to the Blender Cloud.

Update: apparently the videos were removed because the Blender Foundation did not allow ads on them. See Ton's tweet below.

Francesco writes:

Since a few days all Blender videos on the OFFICIAL BLENDER CHANNEL have been blocked worldwide without explanation. We are working with YouTube to resolve the issue, but the support has been less than stellar. In the meantime you can find most of the videos on cloud.blender.org.

This just came in:

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Blender has been growing a lot over the years and along with its community, few people who are directly linked to the CGI speak of Blender's power as a breeding reference, companies like ILM, third-party sectors of ILM use Blender, and this has already been shown in "make of".

I can say with all tranquility that these comments are generated by the big software companies of the branch that wish to act with greater presence the most varied slices of the market. On June 17, 2018, Blender's YouTube channel was BLOCKED, without warning or justification, reminding you that Blender has always been mentioned as a Software that does not leave something to be desired and faces other major software on the market.

We hope that the new version of Blender 2.8 will not be affected by these big companies, and their methods of absorbing the applications.

  2. Youtube recently added new features to its android counterparts (applications) and it's thrown some other channels into disarray too! The monkey on the right side of the screen with lines of text on the left means that they have to fixed thier "issues " before it can be resolved. I have come across 2 channels that started to show up after a while (one of them 5 mind the other 4 hours)

I love youtubes attitude of "if it ain't broken we are still gonna try to fix stuff" and this happens all the time!

  3. So, I see it is because the site isn't monetised - no money in it for Google so they unplug the content and bully people to accept their terms.
This is the flip side of them crushing the monetisation of alternative news sites to kill them off for their friends who don't like what is said about them there.
Well in that case maybe the Blender community hosts their own videos? - and avoids harassment in the future.
The open source mentality doesn't need a named brand like Google's YouTube to get ahead.
Wonder what it would cost for the community to host their own? Might have picked on the wrong group this time...

    • If we don't actually need them it sure would be good to tell Google to shove their contract up their xxx.
Not playing the game would be making a statement of independence and earn kudos from past and future victims.

This event is the most serius fault in the history of youtube, force content creators to accept ads is a very facist measure, explore options like vimeo or a owned media server.

  5. True, YouTube never had a free plan for channels. Maybe it's time to turn to Blender community? After all, enthusiasts are the best channel and they're FREE. Like "Will you help?" "Yes, we will!"

  6. YouTube and Google are commercial companies. They only exist to generate money for their stock holders. Period.

If they do not want to show Blender related material because they don't earn any money through it that is fine. So I guess the Blender community and others need to move the content elsewhere or provide it themselves. That would maybe make YouTube and Google some less attractive to use because you cannot find all you expect to find. But that is not our problem.

  7. It wasn't me!, mind you if Ton pissed off somebody that's higher up at any of those BIG shin digs, I'd say they would do this and like always OPS! it's a computer error lol... But I'm sure they will fix this, you don't want to make it too obvious After all GOD of blender may squish you with the 2.8 messiah fandom! HOORA!! for blender no matter how broken it is, it's always going to get worked on!!!

  8. What I don't get is that they do this without any warning. At least they should send out some kind of email or notification first. WordPress did something similar with a friend of mine's blog. She was perceived as trying to sell stuff on her site when she was only mentioning some books that people could look at and get for themselves. They blew out her account without warning. They fixed things later when the misunderstanding was cleared up, but still...some kind of note - even an automated one - would be nice.

I've always figured that YouTube would eventually come to this. Not that I like the move, but I've figured that YouTube (Google) could only support the entire world's usage of free service for only so long, before they started making ad-based revenue more of a requirement (and started offering subscription-based services).

Honestly, I anticipate that nearly all free video/live-streaming services will go this way. You can only support "free" for so long, until folks do things like adopt ad-blocking software and companies start losing money on the product/service.

"Free" is a pretty expensive thing. I just wonder how long before we start seeing the last of the "free" services in life.

    • The FCC's repeal of the 2015 Net Neutrality Laws went into effect last Monday. The head of the FCC was head legal counsel for Comcast. The Senate voted to block the repeal, but the House needs to vote to block and the President needs to sign. In the interim, the new rules are in effect.

We've already seen major movement in the net providers (big money) world:
Comcast just announced a $65 billion bid to buy 21st Century Fox. This comes just days after a federal judge approved the mega-merger of AT&T and Time Warner.1
This. Is. Terrifying. Two of the biggest and most powerful ISPs in the country will now own both content and the way we view that content.
And between the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality and the federal courts giving a green light to these kinds of mega-mergers, we can expect that this is only the beginning of an unprecedented corporate consolidation of the Internet.

This means big providers, like GOOGLE (the most dangerous entity in the world!) will be able demand and get whatever monetary compensation for there services they wish. If you can't pay, you can't play!
