YouTube Broke the Blender Foundation's Channel

32

Earlier today, the videos on the Blender Foundation's YouTube channel became unavailable. Some users report being able to see some videos, but for most people everything is gone. Ton is looking into it.

Current speculations are that this is caused by an algorithm issue - some other channels like the MIT Open Sourseware channel are also empty.

Remember the Sony issue on 2014?

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

Unsurprising; Youtube has declared war on animation. Only a few popular channels survive... smaller ones are being randomly deleted under insane accusations of violating unrelated community guidelines (eg: being sexual material). It's mind blowing but I can confirm it happens.

Don't use Vimeo: They're even worse than Youtube last I checked, will delete your channel for even stupider reasons. Check out DTube: They are decentralized and censorship free by design.

Eh...looks neat, but I'm even more skeptical of these kinds of "decentralized" platforms.

They tend to have a short shelf life, for whatever reason. And if you're trying to run a business, you just need a platform that's far more familiar, to more of the world.

For those reasons, YouTube's still king. Just like with ZBrush, it's quirky and fussy, but you just deal with the downsides, because its legitimate upsides aren't found anywhere else.

But I'll bookmark the site, though.

  2. In Italy, trying to see a playlist I obtain
"Questo video presenta contenuti di BlenderFoundation. Non è disponibile nel tuo Paese." / "This video presents content from BlenderFoundation. It is not available in your country."
that means there is some kind of geoblocking filter.

In Europe, in 3 days (this 20 June 20018) the European Parliament will vote for CENSORSHIP MACHINES (and other bad laws):
the statement says "Internet platforms hosting “large amounts” of user-uploaded content MUST monitor user behavior and filter their contributions to identify and prevent copyright infringement.".

The commission, the proposer, does not have a clear idea of what it means in terms of digital rights and censorship potential. It also does not know how unsuccessful current technology is.

If this law goes through, we will have to get used to situations like these across Europe...

sounds like a good reason to ditch the EU to me.
it's not like they're actually doing anything decent for you guys anyway.

      • Brian Lockett on

Eh...the EU, the UK, the US, Canada... As the West, we're all slowly sinking.

        Economically. Legislatively. Socially. Politically. Environmentally.

We're all just fooling ourselves, each hoping we're not the first to drown. lol

Seriously, I can't think of one Western nation today, not having this conversation about online censorship laws and privacy issues.

        • Josh Strawbridge on

EU seems to have tried to sneak article 13 through though. this isn't just a conversation. they're actually trying to do it. the vote is really close but people only really started finding out about it about a month ago.

and i'd argue it's a lot worse than what's going on in other places where people are just talking about online censorship and privacy issues.

from what i heard it basically just puts determining copyright issues directly in the hands of large companies and destroys fair use.

it also adds a link tax so you can't even link to things without being taxed for it.
that means people get used to not sharing links meaning news doesn't really travel.
combined with the copyright thing with no fair use means ideas they don't like can easily be squashed under the guise of "copyright infringement." meaning people only get the news they want them to get.

it's basically going to shut people up and keep people from spreading news and ideas amongst themselves. if you thought Nazi germany's book burning practices were bad, welcome to the version that's been updated for the digital age.

if that's not actively trying to screw citizens over 'cause the government is over there saying "we know better" i don't know how it could be anything other than corruption and/or idiocy.

the citizens of the EU are being treated like cattle with this.

rest assured if it makes it through they'll only start applying it gradually so people don't notice the change in order to avoid everyone just leaving the EU because the sudden change would prove how horrible this thing is.

i'd also like to point out places like github are on very shaky ground with Article 13 so it does very much have the potential to affect blender.

article 13 is entirely too far reaching.

          • Brian Lockett on

Well, as for GitHub, sadly, Microsoft's bought it now, so there goes the neighborhood.

I tell you, I hate it when Microsoft starts sniffing too closely around the FOSS world. They make me nervous.

Talk about overlords. Microsoft kills nearly every acquisition they make. Sometimes seemingly deliberate.

But, yeah, that Article 13 sounds disturbing. And probably eventually adopted among other nations, if sadly-repeating history's any indication.

Mmm, strangely enough, the channel is still there and features 1 agent 327 video. It also signals that there are new videos available (with a dot before the 'Videos' tab) but if i have a look none are there. So it doesn't feel like a censorship issue (they would pop up a notice about community standards etc) but maybe some technical glitch ?

  4. It's time Agent 327 to find bad guy on who make this in youtube company. Maybe you must call inspector mumbai.

    Time for heroes is back.

  5. I’m in the U.S.

The playlists are all there, but If I try to start a video, I get the message “This video contains content from BlenderFoundation. It is not available in your country.”

  6. One cause might be that, because the open-movie animations are so widely used, someone or multiple, claimed copyrights on those on blender channel, invoking a response from the YouTube Bot...

    • well, it's fixed now but which blender channel were you talking about?
      the problem was on youtube.com/user/BlenderFoundation
