Video: When blueprints get alive... 12 cylinder. 4 stroke combustion engine

Markus Bliem writes:

Focus of this short 3D Animation is the "inner life" of an 12 cylinder, 4 stroke combustion engine.
Starting with a simple technical drawing, life is beeing breathed to the blueprint and a few seconds later the camera orbits the detailed 3D modell of the engine.

Crankshaft, connecting rod, piston, camshaft and lifter, rocker as well as the geardrive between crank- and camshaft has been modelled quite detailed and are playing together like in real life.

The valve operation, the movement of the valve springs and the rotation of the gears is controlled by a rig, that only takes the actual rotation of the crankshaft into account, making it easy to animate the engine.

Different shot illustrate the function and the interaction of the single components, as well as the combustion in the cylinders in accurate ignition order.

Started to "play" with 3D graphics back in the early nineties and through a long journey, dealing with different 3D packages, i encountered Blender one year ago. I started to "explore" the Blender universe and after i got used to the "Blender syntax" i got quite exited...

  1. Wow what anaimation ,but unlike any engine design I have ever seen. Can't imagine what the intake and exhaust ports look like.with that bore spacing must end up being a very long and wide with dual out board cams.
