Fortunately, creating lightning is completely possible by combining the shrinkwrap, displace, and skin modifiers.
While I refer to this as tesla-coil lightning, it can also be used for magic, and other effects.

I'm really pleased with the reception this has got... Much more views than any other video, and a post on blendernation! I hope to follow it with more tutorials, (1 more online already) , so I would appreciate crits on the vid its self, as well as the technique.
