Hey all,

We've just released appleseed 1.9.0-beta as well as new versions of our Blender, Maya and 3ds Max plugins.

Blenderseed 0.8.0-beta introduces a ton of goodies:

  • OSL materials
  • subsurface scattering
  • denoising
  • animation
  • render passes
  •  alpha mapping
  • nested dielectrics
  • automatic texture convertor
  • many, many fixes and user interface improvements
  • documentation!

@jdent02 has made a very nice video showing some of the new features of blenderseed, in particular OSL shading:

Hopefully we'll see more such videos in the future.

The team has worked very hard to provide all this software and would very much appreciate feedback! Let us know if you have troubles installing or using appleseed or blenderseed, either here, on our forum  or even on Discord if you want to chat with the team.

We will also be more than happy to retweet high quality renders on @appleseedhq.

What's going to happen in the near future: First we're going to try to provide ready-to-render demo scenes so that you guys can give appleseed/blenderseed a try with minimal efforts. It's also quite likely that we'll make point releases of appleseed and/or blenderseed with bug fixes and small improvements.

Last but not least: We unfortunately had to break compatibility with existing blenderseed scenes in this release, we're really sorry. We will try very, very hard not to do that anymore from now on.

  1. Ok so, this probably a basic question you may have answered in the video (I just glanced through it), or seasoned 'appleseeders' already know about - but what do you do for the final renderer? Is Appleseed a completely separate renderer (like Cycles, Eevee, or Vray)? Also, I'm curious if Blenders new 2.8 release will cause this to be an unusable plugin. Thanks!

  2. appleseed is a fully standalone rendering engine that comes with a set of plugins, one of them being for Blender. In that sense, appleseed is an external rendering engine with a solid plugin for Blender but it also works well in Maya, 3ds Max or Gaffer.

    Of course we will make sure that blenderseed works with Blender 2.8 when it's out.

      If I may be so bold, you might want to put that in the release announcement for idiots like myself who have no idea what Appleseed is. Good luck with your product!

    Hello, first of all thank you for your time and the effort on making this tool, I wish to give it a try and I am using Mac Yosemite 10.10.2 and I installed the blenderseed, I have also download and extract on the finder, the appleseed mac version, then set the path to the appleseed folder ( /bin/ ) from the user preferences blenderseed plugin in blender, when I then choose the appleseed render in as the render engine and perform a render it doesn't give any image/render
    Also none of the material/node are available when activating osl node material shading in the node editor

    • Hi Hassan,

      Can you check if appleseed.studio (the binary is called appleseed-studio on macOS) will start? It's appleseed's standalone user interface.

      I'm suspecting that you have an older processor that doesn't support the SSE4.2 instruction set.

        Hi

        it start what look like a consol with this text

        Last login: Tue May 8 14:29:45 on ttys000
        /Users/Madpixel/Desktop/appleseed/bin/appleseed-studio ; exit;
        mac01:~ Madpixel$ /Users/Madpixel/Desktop/appleseed/bin/appleseed-studio ; exit;
        Illegal instruction: 4
        logout

        [Opération terminée]

        • This error means that your processor is too old and does not support the SSE4.2 instruction set. Sorry for the disappointment...
