Meet the New 2018 Blender Institute!

27

The Blender Institute is moving to a (much) bigger office! This will provide enough space for larger teams, such as the Blender 2.8 Code Ques, which there this Tuesday, or for movie production and training. Also, they now have "official bathrooms" (to quote Ton ;-). It's located 2 metro stops from Amsterdam Central station, so easily accessible. They'll need another month to do a little construction. Enjoy this quick tour by Ton!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Roomy with lots of light. Congrats. Hope next Blender releases will be at least as good as conditions you now have. Easter bunny did well. Happy Easter!

  2. Nice to see Ton in a video and to see him brimming with enthusiasm. I remember seeing the video of old building and I seem to remember he painted the interior himself with help from artists. This one is definitely a better proposition and has a bit of style to the outside. More of a workspace and less of a cave. It needs a large Blender logo on façade to complete the vision... I guess this marks Blender as being grown up to a 'professionals' program for which many people should have congratulations. I really hope it doesn't cost too much p.a. to be here though. The central city can't be cheap surely? Did he talk this through with people? I always worry Ton commits to too big a projects in his determination. Someone needs to tell him as Chairman/CEO/Producer he has to wear a suit now or at least turtlenecks and designer jeans if you have fancy office and proper toilet. Hope toilet is also sound proof...

    • My understanding is that they actually moved to real-estate that was cheaper per sq/ft - the last location was in the middle of a tourist area and the get the same expanded space in that area would be quite expensive comparatively.

Excelente, amigos..!!!

Yay from the States! You're moving ahead and you have a beautiful space and building! Can't wait to see the final touches! Blender is getting bigger and better and it's for everyone!

    Yours truly,
    Dedicated Blender user!

  5. Congratulations! that looks like a wonderful space to grow in! Lots of potential. One small suggestion, I think you should have a VR/Motion Capture space somewhere. The Vive is making it extremely affordable and I am sure eventually the blender openHMD branch will bear fruit. Good luck and thank you.

  6. I personally believe the historic building in Amsterdam had its charms and looked so much more stylish and baroque.

What is the Blender Foundation going to do with all that space?

    • My guess is that it is big enough for 36 artists - depending how well they get on > Ton is advancing his plans for making movies - consultation with community? nooo... we have benevolent dictator!

      • Yup.. that is also my guess. The main motivation is to have room for 3d artist to make motion pictures.

(but I'm also wondering if this move to a bigger location also was the surprise - that BF said they would unveil if the Code Quest crowdfunding campaign passed 2.500 donations).

  7. This is so awesome! Love to see Ton's enthusiasm. This is a nice reward for hard work over the years AND a fantastic launch-point for the future. Look forward to seeing what's next for our Blender 3d community. Congratulations!

  8. This is really cool! Maybe there would be enough room for acting as a satellite for the Blender Conference too!
