The patent is only valid in the US. It does not restrict usage of this technology anywhere else. But if you use it in the US or the author is based in the US, they should be careful for the next two years (then the patent will run out anyway)
The sketch-up viewport looks prettier.

Unfortunately this tool relies on the Carve solver for booleans which has been removed from the Blender master branch. Also unfortunately simply changing the solver to BMESH in the python script produces unexpected results. It's fine to use in Blender 2.79a, which still has the Carve solver.
It seems to me to be an excellent integration with the blender, even though I think with Sketchup it looks like the thing becomes more functional and practical.
