I think Paweł Somogyi did an outstanding job on this hamburger. It's not easy to make food realistic, but I think he achieved it!

Done in Blender. Mostly procedural textures, but I had to make some textures too - salad and tomato textures were painted in Gimp. And the text on toothpick. Oh, and the fingerprints on the table. But that's it.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Now when you say you "painted" textures in Gimp, you mean that you created the images from scratch for your UV's? I was gunna say, the only thing that even vaguely gave me the suspicion this was a render was the lettuce (though due to stiffness, not textures). I obviously can't articulate it, but I wonder if the bun is a little bit to glossy as well. How much subsurface scattering did you include in the bun? Ultimately, this is a testament to organic 3d artists everywhere!!!

  2. Oh, thanks for the shoutout, Bart! That's awesome, I'm flattered!

Zachary - yes, well - the tomato has a bump map and a transparency map, and that was painted based of a photo I took. The lettuce is hand painted (color and bump maps), with procedural noise texture on top. The stiffness is always a tough call - it's supposed to be rucola (or arugula, another name), and those leaves are quite stiff when they're fresh. I was actually thinking I made them look too soft, but I figured they soften up a bit from the heat of the burger. The gloss on the bun was supposed to mimic it being smeared with egg white for baking. That's why there's more gloss on top. But I'm not disagreeing - if it looks off, that means you're right :)

Homeless Ton - those actual leaves are not edible for sure (being CGI), but the type of a plant they represent are not only edible, but also taste good and are quite healthy. Either that or I'm slowly poisoning myself every time I eat them ;)

Thanks for all the kind words!
