Free book on texturing in Blender

I started to write a book on UV texturing before my son was born, due to amount of work I never managed to finish it. I want to do something with the material I have so far. Best thing I could think of - give it away.

In general it is written with semi-advanced users in mind, but it contains a lot of in depth basics which can be useful for all readers. Although it might be hard to follow if you're a beginner.

Keep in mind, the book lacks some content, I wanted to go through a whole project in the second part of the book and add a chapter on PBR workflow. Never did, never will. It wasn't proof read, nor properly translated, there are still my side notes in it, it's full of goofy remarks and that's pretty much the state I left it in.

Also, I'd like to thank my friends, who powered through the book giving me advice and pointing out mistakes. That is Piotr Arłukowicz and Chris Kuhn.

Oh yeah, feel free to comment on the thing.

I like the idea of open book project. For those of you interested in reviewing and editing, I'm posting the older version of the document made in GoogleDocs. Pretty much all the content is there however it lacks final formating and might differ from the pdf file in some details (unfortunately I can't recall what changes were made). I know Docs are not perfect but it's the only colab editor I know of and I have the file already there. Anyone interested can send me a request via Docs.

  1. thank you so much! it s really nice and helped me even if I have been reading for 30 minutes now!...maybe you can also share an Open Office or Word file not only PDF ? ...so we can make it an "Open Book" and one could write some of the missing info s in some passages...A big Thank you!

    • DTP was done in InDesign (shame on me, but meh) I'll try to export it to Scribus or some format that can be easily edited.

Tried to download the free book on Texturing in Blender on two different devices without success. Can anyone help? I wanted a pdf file but could not get it.

  3. This is pretty cool! I was wondering if the book can be updated to include PBR texturing? Albedo, Metallic, Roughness, Normal, subsurface, etc?

  4. Thank you for giving so freely of your time and knowledge to make available a very useful resource for understanding the intricacies of 3D texturing in Blender. Your efforts are much appreciated.
