Blender tutorial: Modeling With The Cloth Simulator

I have followed Blender community for years and I have seen that the cloth simulator has been for too long a little bit too overlooked feature in Blender. So I wanted to figure out new methods to use the feature to model things. I hope you will get inspired by this and start doing more things with this powerful feature in Blender. :)

I am an experimental artist. I do things with whatever methods that feel good for the moment. 3D seems to be my main thing atm, but I also do photography, drawing and graphic design, logos etc. Let's design something! :)

  1. I don't mean to be a downer but you mentioned that blender's cloth sim is too overlooked and then you followed up with a tutorial on how to make padded leather. It's just this is how pretty much every modeler would do so it is unfair to regard a common procedure as an overlooked secret. But, we think blender's cloth sim sucks because in terms of character animating, blender cloth sim is probably the worst. It simply won't articulate properly to meet production requirement, so yea, it will continue to be "overlooked" until it gets competitive enough not to be.

Again, I'm not here to point fingers at your modelling technique, I'm just saying blender should really improve their cloth sim.

    • Oh, I agree with you. The cloth simulation could do with lots of improvements. But meanwhile when the developers are thinking if they would improve it, we, as an artist can use what we have and try to make nice results with it to show them that we use it. :) I hope videos like this would get the developers also interested in the possibilities and lead them to think of implementing more features to it. There are lots of papers online from where they could find ideas.

For example in 3Ds max, there has been for years a lot better cloth simulator, but because I am a Blender user, I try to use the blender's cloth simulator to reach my targets as good as I can.

  2. Hope it is the start of a series focused on the cloth simulation and how to tame it. I really need some help from people with more experience with it, and "just use marvelous" doesn't count as help
