Here are the notes from today's 9 UTC (10 CET) meeting in irc.freenode.net #blendercoders.
Bastien Montagne writes:
1) Blender 2.79 'a' release
- Release is going along nicely so far, you can track status here (for main repo) and here (for addons).
- We need to check recent commits (from 19/12/2017), and finalize
merging of conflicting ones.- Goal is to make a testbuild on Wednesday (note that we cannot use
buildbot for those, because some libraries were updated since 2.79
release…).2) Blender 2.8 projects
- Nothing much to report, Christmas holidays… Sergey reports that
initial tests with new CoW depsgraph seem encouraging though.- Weekly reports:
- Sergey was on holidays, still worked a bit on task scheduling
refactor (better multi-core CPUs handling).- Dalai Felinto
- Clément Foucault
- Campbell Barton

Do we know if Blender 2.8 will have the ability to work in Cycles as it does now? I don't like Cycles always being active when modelling and editing. I prefer to have the option to turn it on and off.
Same here.
i think the intent is for users to work in eevee and switch to cycles to render/test render.
the node setups are meant to work with both cycles and eevee so that way you can get a much better viewport estimate of what it'll look like while you work than the current material/texture modes.
