Stars, particles, wires and space: a music video

A bit of a change from corporate work – my first attempt at a music video. Made with Blender and After Effects and several metric tons of coffee. The brief was to make a video based on the mandala design you see at the end, so I tried to come up with a sort of story … though it still ended up pretty abstract. Kinda mesmerising though.

A couple of quick tips / things I’ve learnt along the way:

  • nesting dupli-groups within dupli-groups works very well in Blender. Most of the mandala is made of single curves, group instanced into bundles, and then those bundles group instanced into place around the mandala. That whole thing is then just linked into the various scene files, so there’s multiple levels of instancing going on… Great way to build up complex structures.
  • rendering out as EXR files rather than PNG may hammer your disk space, but it keeps overbright information intact – ie RGB values above 1,1,1. This can be very handy for compositing later, whether adding glows, or just playing with exposure
