I just use SheepIt. It may not be as diverse and glitch-free as a pay render farm, but it's free.
I wonder about the economics of render farms. When people at blendercon talk about rendering and deadlines, it always sounds as if they have a finite amount of computing bandwidth, and lose money if they can't get everything done by then. Why don't they use render farms or even cloud computing in these circumstances? In many other fields, we assume by now that one CPU for one hundred hours is as expensive as a hundred CPUs for one hour.
I know, it's not always that simple, and I am probably missing something, that's why I ask ;-)

Thanks for your interest in render farms! Indeed rendering on your computer for 100 hours could be about the same as rendering on 100 computers for 1 hour but there are a few differences:
- with very powerful computers, it won't even take 1 hour. For instance, one of our clients rendered an animation in less than 30 minutes on our computers whereas the time was 3 days 13 hours and 10 minutes with his Intel i7 4960X, 24GB RAM.
- your computer can be used at something else while the job is rendered in our farm so in the end, you spend money on the farm but you can keep on working which has a value as well.
- when you benefit from almost limitless power, you can also be more ambitious in creating your images because you know that you will be able to render them without problem.
