Blender Animation Studio team announces 'Spring' Open Movie Project

4

Andy Goralczyk will be directing the 12th open movie project by the Blender Animation Studio. Similar to how Sintel was a driving and validating force behind the Blender 2.5 project, Spring will be the "full production test" of Blender 2.8. Andy is aiming to produce a 7-minute film in 8-9 months.

Andy writes:

A month ago I pitched a story to our whole Blender Animation Studio team. Luckily everyone liked it and it got green-lit as our 12th Open Movie production!

The film follows a mountain spirit and her wise little dog. Together they bring spring to the valleys after a long and dark winter in the mountains.

The film’s art direction is in the hands of David Revoy - who worked on three of our short films as concept artist before. I’m very excited to be working with him! For Spring we’ll stay very close to David’s creative universe - presenting a universe influenced by European and Asian folk tales and myths. The resulting film will look beautiful and atmospheric.

I’m trying to have my camera around for most of the production and post video updates as often as I can. Here is a video showing the first concept week where I went to France to work with David:

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. seems pretty cool.

would it be wrong to hope for two different versions one using certain realtime techniques and such that are less likely to be seen in a full cycles rendered version where hardware power is a concern for sims and render farms that can render for days, weeks, or more aren't an option?

you know, things like mesh hair rigged up with hardbody physics / jiggle bones and other such performance cheap but still quality adding and time saving tricks.

studios may be likely to keep on doing full renders in cycles after all but a lot of us single users and small groups aren't near as likely to have the hardware for that and are planning on using eevee as our final render engine.

  2. This is hopeful, as David Revoy does the illustrated comic Pepper & Carrot, and he is very committed to hand drawn illustrations style. They may go the way of Grease Pencil on this one, but one can hope that the non-Freestyle line rendering concept demonstrated by the Chinese student gets a full hearing a Blender Institute, as then we could have Realtime 3D object line rendering coupled with Grease Pencil options, the best of both. With this being a fully supported Blender movie, I can only hope!!! Looks excellent and the concept for the story has potential.....Yes !

  3. I am always happy, no overjoyed to see the process from start to finish of any project, especially animations. There was a student short, Walter 3.0, that had a dedicated site showing their development process, from concept, animation prep(videos of them acting out the scenes), character creation, set design and creation, etc.
I think it's very inspirational as well as important for artists who may or may not work in the "biz" to see the process.
