I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Finally the workspace will change, now with tabs, so good!!!!!. And as default left mouse click to select and click and drag enable by default to rectangular selection, not the ugly "B" button for this simple action. Thanks goood, thanksss!!!!

I notice, reluctantly, that there is no mention of any NPR (Non-Photographic Rendering) targets for the 2.8 release. This is disastrous, in that BI is going away, Freestyle only works with BI and the need for NPR solutions is crucial in the world of animation, anime, illustration, arch/viz, etc. I do not want to have to use Maxon, or Max Pencil+ The creative possibilities are more open with artistic freedoms and being myopic about "Photo Real" whether it be in Cycles or EeVee is limiting!! Blender should do a movie project with NPR focus. Take their current Agent movie and re-issue it as an animation with hand drawn lines and coloration. Now there is a challenge I would like to see. Ton, are you or anybody else listening???

    • You're aware that the latest Legend of Zelda is PBR yet still looks cartoon, right? NPR style can totally be achieved with the current/upcoming tools. Besides, there are talks about Freestyle being ported to the viewport/Eevee. It's happening on the bf-committers mailing list (read the thread at https://lists.blender.org/pipermail/bf-committers/2017-August/048606.html ).

It's quite some work that needs planning so there is no official announcement yet. We want the 2.8 page to show actual ongoing development. Don't worry. Freestyle is important, it won't go away.

PS: Thanks Bart for posting the page!

      • We do appreciate the free store project, but we are talking about the flat color look of NPR, we do not have that capability in the upcoming session unless we do aton load of hacking, if you look at Maya's toon settings they have these flat colors ready made for you to use, the room shader we currently have has no such capability and is in dire need of help, it is also predicted that in 2018 the appeal of pbr will lose it's edge slightly in favor of more stylized renders, I understand 2.8 is about seeing the groundwork to go forward, but 2.81 should at least start to develop this side of blender since we should have most of the basis of the new version covered.
