Weekly Blender Developers meeting notes - September 3, 2017

12

Here are the notes from today's 14 UTC meeting in irc.freenode.net #blendercoders.

Ton Roosendaal writes:

1) Blender 2.79 release

  • After some deliberations it was decided to finally do the actual release. Even when Release Candidates get tested, nothing beats doing an actual release!
  • Campbell Barton and Bastien Montagne will make a list of fixes to merge in the release branch.
Will be notified on this list.
  • Release Ahoy then is expected mid this week.

2) Google Summer of Code

  • In two days all reviews have to be submitted. September 6 the results will be announced.

3) Meeting re-schedule and communication channels

  • With the full-time developers now doing Monday meetings (working day :), the Sunday meeting is loosing urgency and lacks and attendance. The proposal to move the official meeting to Monday has been accepted, but with an alternating
schedule to allow both America's and Australia/Asia to attend. The schedule will be confirmed in the meeting notes.
  • Next meetings:
    • Monday 4 September 10 AM Amsterdam (8 UTC)
    • Monday 11 September 9 AM Los Angeles (16 UTC)
    • Monday 18 September 10 AM Amsterdam (8 UTC)
    • Monday 26 September 9 AM Los Angeles (16 UTC)
  • Discussions on how to manage a "This Week in Blender" log is ongoing.
  • An open discussion is also to bring back forums (discourse), or use them next to mailing lists.
We could try this as experiment for a couple of special interest groups (animation code, vfx, viewport).

Pros and cons, speak up!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Also put NPR is the special interest groups. It has been pretty hard, inconvenience and inefficient to communicate with the mailing list and IRC with all the timezone and life in general.

  2. When looking at the Blender Website it says 2.78 was released on February 28, 2017.
But that's the release date of 2.78c.
Which doesn't contain any new features compared to 2.78b,a, or original 2.78, just bugfixing.

Release of the first original 2.78 was september 27 2016, which is almost a year ago, making the transition from 2.78 to 2.79 the by far longest release cycle ever since the 2.5 makeover.

I'm so hungry for all the new stuff we heard about for a full year now! (Okay, I'm already using the RCs for working stuff right now....)

  3. 2.79 is cool, but 2.8 is where it's at! I love the new asset management feature. So simply implemented, you'd think it was there, all along. It's a bit like groups and layers in Photoshop. I'm so cluttered, I've been needing this for a while, now.

  4. All the trial versions of 2.79 hasn't been working on my PC always complaining of opengl problem. Pls help me out with this in the final release.

  5. "Release Ahoy then is expected mid this week"

    ...

Still nervously, fluttered, aroused and excited awaiting the "mid" of "this week" (friday afternoon ...)

obviously, stil more to fix than thought ...

    I know i know - it's ready when it's ready ..
