Update on Asset-Flinger Addon

I have forked Asset-Flinger and updated to some long awaited features in Version 0.3:

  • Thumbnails are automatically generated on export.
  • UI is now changed depending on the chosen blender theme.
  • If more assets are available than there is space to show them, the mouse wheel can be used to scroll through.
  • The primary data exchange format is .blend instead of .obj, so materials, modifiers and other settings are preserved. Even curves and other non mesh data should work (extensive testing required).

Testers are very welcome!

For the record, you update by first having Version 0.2 installed, and then use User Preferences to install 0.3, which overwrites 0.2 with 0.3.

At least, that's how I did it. Seems Version 0.3 is just the updates for Version 0.2, to add to what's already installed.

      • The addon itself is a single script file which requires some support files in its subfolders, so either fresh install or overwriting is possible. If you got problems on a fresh install, please report back.

    • The core idea for thumbnail generation stays the same to the original: The exported .obj is imported into a prepared .blend file and the thumbnail is renderered by an external blender instance. This was previously done using external scripts, but now automatically called from the addon.
This has one downside: Thumbnail rendering blocks your active blender instance as long as it takes, which is longer with more complex assets. If this is a problem, I can try to do this in an detached process, just inform me and we will see :-)

        • Hi. I've used the render scene from the original authors of Asset-Flinger. I don't know the origin of this scene, as I have enhanced this addon starting 2 weeks ago when I found it on GitHub. The original scene seems to be 2 years old.

          • I mean, this type of renders.

Or maybe you just copied the thumbnails from an AM pack.

        • No, these are models I made some years ago. The way they look like as thumbnail is how all assets are rendered *automatically* on export. I currently look through my old scenes and extract usable meshes for my own library. If they look similar to something you made, sorry, but they are quite low poly and could be created in 5 minutes.

          • I mean the render scene, the look is identical to the render scene for my addon.

After it's not a big deal, just having the same render will confuse people.

  1. hello h0bB1T, i am excited to try this out, but unfortunately, i can't upload blend files to the scene, only obj. anyway, i fresh installed this addon but it seems to not working for me. could you take a look at this? or this this just me having this problem?

I'm trying your enhancement, it works no problem on 279 rc.
Great Job! Using blends it's a brilliant idea!

  3. Cant seem to get it working. Should work with blend files now. But only my folders are showing and not the files. Using the latest Blender version. 2.79
