Grease Pencil 2.8 sneak peek

10

Pablo Vazquez writes:

Daniel gives us a quick sneak peek on the new Grease Pencil in the upcoming Blender 2.8

The new Grease Pencil’s main focus is to create a more friendly interface for the 2D artist, while keeping the advantages of having a full 3D suite underneath. Grease Pencil is no longer just a stroke, it’s now a real Blender object with huge improvements to brushes and tools.

Credits go to the Grease Pencil developers Antonio Vazquez and Joshua Leung. While Daniel Martinez Lara and Matias Mendiola support the developers with demos and testing.

This development is currently happening on the ‘greasepencil-object’ branch, based off 2.8, and it will be merged soon so everybody can test using the build-bot.

  1. Happy to see 2D animation tools in Blender being improved. I'm curious on how grease pencil will work with 3D objects in the future.

  2. This is supercool! The direction the creators are taking is the best possible. And so good to see the Foundation supporting it - giving it its own object type is soooo much what this needed.
And wait until some serious 2D guys will find out about this... this will spread like wildfire!
Some asked and I'm also curious in what ways it is renderable.

  3. That is so good. Thank you very much to all the developers!!! I'm looking forward and to this. I hope they add support to render grease pencil on Cycles. Pleeese :D

I'm so keen to being able to do proper stereo-graphic VR video with animations in it and that would make it much easier to render directly with an equirectangular camera. I did a bad looking and quick test faking that behavior by importing pre-rendered animation as planes but that workflow is kind of messy:
