I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. That is very awesome! I can imagine this to be quite useful! instead of selecting a small area to render, we can just render selected objects. very exciting :D

  2. Well, I'm curious how Blender is turning out in the next version - no matter if it's 2.79 or 2.80... at the moment I'm not very happy with how it's turning out. In the past, I was looking forward to new versions because they brought new features and Cycles improvements etc.

But - today I'm a bit frustrated. With the current official version 2.78c I have the problem that opening older (from previous 2.78 saved) Blender files containing videos edited in the VSE, it instantly crashes. If I uncheck "Load UI", it crashes after opening the file and changing layout to "Video Editing". But I can create new video editings. If I try to open the older file in an older version, everything's okay but the new files let the older version crash. But "normal" files without videos work fine.

With the 2.78 build from 2017-03-28 hash 82bcfb9 both VSE and "normal" files work - that's okay so far. Now the latest build from 2017-05-02 hash d187014 opens the VSE files without problems, but instead crashes when I try to render still images from older files microdisplacement...

I'm wondering if the next official release will be really stable and capable of opening, editing and rendering all kinds of my older files... at the moment (to me) it seems like it's jumping around from one problem to the other.

    • I forgot to say, while the build from 2017-03-28 is not crashing with microdisplacement files, it is unfortunately not rendering the microdisplacement either. It has no effect on the surface of an object.

      • did you report a bug? what you are describing shouldn't be happening. but if the devs don't know about it, they won't be able to fix it.

        • No I didn't. When I'm looking at the bug reports there are some dealing with VSE crashes, but because they are mostly talking technical stuff which I don't understand I'm not sure if my problem is already covered there. And since the few times I tried to report bugs I was told my bug report didn't qualify for a proper bug report (because of not enough technical information or because I reported something that was already described somewhere else... or because no-one could reproduce my results so it's not a bug but a problem of my system) I gave up on bug reports. Most of the times my problems were solved with new versions and other people use Blender much more so they might discover it if it's a bug.

    • I do believe they have already stated that 2.8 will break files. They are changing the architecture of the application. It will be a new version of Blender. It is the consequence of wanting a faster, more feature-filled, and stable version of Blender.

That is my understanding at least.

  3. Hello everyone! I tried to run blender 2.8 but got crash: Win 32 Error 8341_The specified OpenGL version and feature set are either invalid or not supported - this message on the start console. My system: APU 3500M 6620G, 6650m, 8 gb RAM, Win 7 x64. Of course, this assembly is a test but I want to believe that support for HD6*** series cards will be implemented. Eevee is a very good thing!
