Surface Follow Script is now available

7

This script by Rich Colburn is going to change the way you think about cloth simulation and other animated deformed surfaces.

At the 2016 Blender Conference I showed a script that lets you bind an object to the surface of another object. It's great for attaching accessories to already-rigged characters or any other situation where you want an object to deform with the surface of another object.

I've made the script available as an addon along with two others on GitHub.

The second script let's you create a flattened version of your mesh similar to UV unwrapping. It works great with the surface follow script for placing or deforming objects along the surface of a complex shape.

The third script lets you transform textures right in the viewport by clicking and dragging. You can move, rotate, and scale textures with custom origins.

This is incredible! I use professionally Blender a lot in industrial design to generate 3d structures and such with deformations which CAD apps sometimes only offer in limited capabilities.

  2. I use it almost every time I model anything now. I just used it to wrap text around an object yesterday.
Luca Rood has also made a version of the same idea as a modifier. The "Surface Deform" modifier is used almost exactly the same way. I still use the script in some cases when the surface deform modifier throws errors but both tools are amazing.

  3. Just want to thank both Richard Colburn and Luca for their awesome contributions. Saved us hours for such soft sim, not to mention making the process far more fun for the artists.

Manuel Bastioni Labs video have just shown how Surface Deformer can be as a more real time hack on pony tail.
