Radeon ProRender pre-announces plugin for Blender

8

AMD is further strengthening their support for Blender by working on a Blender plugin for their Radeon ProRender suite.

Along with the Maya plug-in for Windows and Linux we are also announcing today that we are planning to release a Radeon ProRender plug-in for Blender™.

Like our other plug-ins, Radeon ProRender for Blender is planned to be a physically-accurate and easy to use renderer that’s integrated into Blender’s viewport so you can work with Radeon ProRender in real-time and see your changes as you make them. Like the other plug-ins, it will come with an extensive material library which artists can use as is, easily adjust within Blender, or even quickly learn to make their own.

Radeon ProRender for Blender Beta Features

  • Fast and accurate – It’s designed to be physically accurate, lighting fast and easy to use.
  • Hardware agnostic – If your computer can run OpenCL 1.2, it can run Radeon ProRender.
  • Fully integrated – for use with Blender.
  • Physically correct material library – comes with its own material library for easy starting and reference points.
  • Supports emissive and photometric Lighting, as well as lights from HDRI environments, letting you blend a scene in with its surroundings.
  • Supports Windows.
  • No cost!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. This could become the first serious alternative to Cycles. Renderman is free only for non-commercial usage, but this one is open source. A good material library in itself is great.

  2. soon (tm)
yeah, wake me when its ready. Cycles development with AMD was so slow that I went and got my first nVidia card.
As a gamer i get all the other fixes too like PhysiX and CUDA which are way more supported.

  3. AMD needs to catch up. Lots of people have migrated to Nvidia because of the slow-pace support from AMD on Cycles and other software, thus supporting a company that encourages privative solutions. We need the open source community to stay strong and big. And having a Hardware partner like AMD on the side of open source developers is a HUGE deal.
I think RYZEN, VEGA and Radeon PRORENDER could be an awesome combo.

  4. Very cool. If I understand correctly, I believe 2.8 will improve integration of 3rd party render engines in Blender (I'm not a fan of the special builds you have to use for Octane...) AMD getting behind Blender is also pretty big... Exciting times.
