Viewport Project – Plan of Action

4

Dalai presents an overview of the 2017 development roadmap for Blender, including the new EEVEE, or "Extra Easy Virtual Environment Engine".

December, the time of the year for hot chocolate mugs, bright decoration lights and, of course, development roadmap. In the spirit of the season, the following document is the plan of action for the viewport project in Blender 2.8. Throughout 2017 we are expecting to tackle:

  • Final design of engines and passes
  • Clay engine
  • Implement remaining edit modes as passes
  • Workbench engine
  • Eevee engine
  • Port Cycles materials to the Eevee engine
  • Implement missing engines

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Does anyone know yet if wireframe modes are still staying in Blender? Because I seriously am getting worried about that. If wireframe modes are removed in 2.8, then, well.... 2.78 may be the last version of Blender I use.

Not only is it essential for 3D modelling for me (I tried counting the number of times I used wireframe to select verts through walls in one session, I couldn't keep track, too many times!), but I even regularly have my boss ask for wireframe versions of things I'm making. I work in a furniture company, sometimes they really really like to use a wireframe version of a product I've modelled in their marketing material.

    Seriously does anyone know? :x

    • This seems very unlikely, the wireframe mode is very usefull.

On code.blender.org they said that the wireframe mode may not be updated if not necessary, so the actual wireframe mode will surely be in the next version.

Perhaps not the correct spot to ask, but shoot. Is there a way i can keep the current scene when i switch between layouts? Now when i have a model with 4 scene orso and then switch the layout, each layout remembers in which scene it was. I tend to find this anoying in a lot of causes. When i switch between viewport and uv editor i constantly need to switch the scene to the current working one. I can not really think of a workflow where you want to show the old one.

Does some one know a certain setting ive missed perhaps?
