Blender Developers meeting notes, October 9, 2016

7

2.78a update release probably this week! Here are the notes from today's 14 UTC meeting in irc.freenode.net #blendercoders.

Ton Roosendaal writes:

1) Blender 2.78 release status

  • Lots of small issues were reported, several severe ones that require an update release.
  • Blender 2.78 'a' will be decided on mid this week. Sergey Sharybin and
    Bastien Montagne coordinate.
  • The list of crucial fixes will be added to the release log with a readable text!
  • Windows .msi installer: the error has been solved, the SDL library was updated without rebuilding binary.
  • The MacOS installer error for users is still unsolved. Needs dev time (scripts should not write in .app)

2) Other projects and 2.8

  • The viewport team did a call for help.
  • Brecht van Lommel: For Blender 2.8 we decided on Mac 10.9 minimum. (Current is 10.12)
  • Grease pencil drawing uses 100% modern OpenGL now.
  • Brecht: new libs have been committed and we're ready to switch to c++11 on macOS in blender 2.8, just waiting for linux now.

I'll be in LA for a week bizz, next meeting & minutes will be handled by Sergey!

Thanks,

-Ton-

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    • I guess you haven't been around the Blender community long yet if you ask that question :) Cross-platform compatibility has always been a key point for Blender.

      • No I haven't been around blender community at all. I am very new to blender only been using it for a few weeks and been in animation just 6 months. So yes I am very new and just trying to learn. Would love all the help I can get. My question may have sounded stupid, but it is only a stupid question if I don't ask. Thanks

        • In that case, welcome to the Blender community! All sorts of backwards and platform compatibility is one of our strong suits, no need to worry :)

  1. Thanks Bart for having me, I'm excited about the ventures that I will embark on learning and experiencing Blender.

    Thanks
