The Rock Essentials - now available

11

Blender Guru offers two packs with hundreds of 3D scanned rocks, offering what's sometimes referred to as 'deep realism' for your scenes.

Andrew Price writes:

1 year in the making, The Rock Essentials is now available.

It's the largest pack of photoscanned rocks, cliffs, brushes and assets, for creating jaw dropping environments in Blender.

  1. This is expensive, and I hate the way Andrew takes the most inflated prices possible and uses the infomercial-speak to sell his stuff. However, it IS good quality AND he does keep the content up / available for download for years. He also has freelance and support staff that work for him that all get paid. So it's not exactly expensive if you use it. Just to buy it casually to play with, yes it's very expensive. It's certainly not developing world prices, it's 1st world country prices.

"Just to buy it casually to play with, yes it's very expensive. It's certainly not developing world prices, it's 1st world country prices."

Well, the bulk of such content like this isn't particularly aiming for hobbyists and dabblers, anyways. It's ideally targeting working professionals who spend money to save time.

Andrew does rather give the ol' infomercial shtick (the numbers do seem rather arbitrary), but he's not particularly wrong in using a comparison.

(I just wished he'd use an asterisk to show WHAT products he's comparing...)

Many other products like this do get quite pricey--but studios and freelancers are used to it. To professionals, it's common to spend money to save time, which makes money.

Blender's community is very different than most other 3D software communities, in that most Blender users are not working 3D professionals, while most users of other 3D software are.

Since most people aren't small-business owners and freelance professionals among the Blender community, this kind of pricing becomes steep to most.

Though, I'd say that nothing's "developing-world prices," given that most of the developing world (about 4.4 billion) don't even have Internet.

      • Yeah except he didn't show any actual proof of competing products. It's not like it would have hurt him given that competing products would be for different software. We're just supposed to believe it, and since you agree that his "schtick" is unbecoming and reeks of snake oil sales, I think I'll just leave it there.

Oh, and for the record, I did see you say "So it's not exactly expensive if you use it." I see that you get it about pricing and stuff.

I'm replying to (and generally agreeing with) you, while talking generally to the Blender public. ;)

  2. Looks like genuine quality. I hope it is successful enough to generate more such products. I won't buy it just to play with (although that is somewhat tempting), but I am fortunate enough to make most of my income using Blender and will definitely purchase this is I ever get asked to do a nice outdoor environment requiring rocks.
