Google Summer of Code honours 10 Blender projects

14

An integrated liquid/smoke simulator, Cycles optimizations, new sculpting tools, Cycles denoising, improved bezier curves, layer management, motion tracking and UV tools? Sounds to me like Blender has hit the jackpot now that Google supports 10 amazing Summer of Code projects!

Which projects are you most excited about?

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. We need at last much better physics simulations (Fluid, Smoke, Particles, Rigid Body destruction etc) not BGE. Now You can't think about Blender as a serious film/animation production tool. We have great Motion Tracker, but We can't make great effects. Because We don't. B-Fund should even make a special donation and announce it. I know We can donate when We like. But if there will be a donation only focused on physics simulation it can really push it.

I'm glad to see some items on this list, though it's only a jackpot if they get finished.

So, good luck to those endeavoring this summer. ;)

  3. You have no idea how happy I am to hear they're finally updating layers. Is it just for the 3D viewport or will this extend to the bone layers and render passes too?

  4. Let's see how many of these project make the finish line because in the past many GSoC projects were funded but never amounted to anything.

  5. Clearly, for me it's the denoiser, having a decent one is the key for rendering animation without a renderfarm needed! I tested the experimental branch with the denoiser included, the result is already there and very promising (to see how awesome it can be, just look at pixar renderman's denoiser !!!).
Also pretty happy to see a Package Manager Proposal for addons and of course the Layer Manager (haaa the layer manager... ;) )
