Asset Giveaway: Painted Metal Shader for Cycles

8

Mike Pan is giving away an awesome procedural metal shader.

This is a painted metal material I created for Blender. The material is a ‘megashader’ that includes effects such as paint peeling, rust, bubbling paint, scratches and other imperfections. The shader is completely parameter driven, and can be used to represent brand-new metallic objects as well as old and derelict surfaces. It’s mostly procedural, and you can even animate the parameters to create changes over time.

The shader is released under CC-Zero. You can use it however you want, even for commercial purposes.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Very useful, and surprisingly fast to render considering all those nodes. Thanks for offering this in the true Blender spirit - free!

  2. I've tried experimenting with the pointiness attribute to achieve these kind of results in the past and haven't even come close, going to have to do some reverse engineering here :) Great work!

  3. RealTimeBrush on

A fantastic versatile and incredibly flexible shader that is going to take a huge amount of play and testing just to measure what it is capable of, very well done and thank you very much for sharing it with the community!
