Judy Hopps (with blend)

Hello everyone!

Spent the last couple weeks working on this character rig, and I'm finally happy with how it is looking. The hair was fighting me every step of the way, especially when it came to the deformation of the head mesh, but otherwise things were pretty smooth. Learned a lot from that at least.

Anyways, I has a ton of fun making this, so hopefully you guys enjoy experimenting with it just as much!

Criticism is always welcome :)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I haven't seen the movie, but based on promo images that looks near indistinguishable from the film asset. really really impressive!

less of a critique than just an observation considering the incredible attention to detail (and because the fur is a big part of the character), i notice you kept the inner ear fur-less. i was wondering if it had anything todo with challenges in blender getting the right mix of inner ear translucency along with the fur?

again, truly fantastic work, and i didn't even check out the rig yet

    • The transparency that I would need for the hair in the ears was killing the render times, and since my computer is not all that hot, it wasn't feasible for animation with that enabled. Without transparency the inner ear hairs just looked bad, so I had to have a fairly sharp cutoff.

  2. You did a fantastic job on creating this! You did so well, I thought that Disney/Pixar had actually gone through the effort to allow some interns convert the original model into Blender format as a part of an announcement of a new open movement for their IP - but I was foolish to have such hopes. Fantastic job on this! You had me convinced it was the original!

This is probably gonna sound stupid, but I am new to blender (Downloaded it just for this rog, actually) but I just need to know how to enable the fur, and the actual textures, it currently looks like it's made of play-dough. Thanks in advance!

  4. well i will be honest i have that model (the one you can download) but i see many NSFW models and i want one of those but i can never find it by googling it (i tried "NSFW Judy Hopps 3d model download" and "Judy hopps naked 3d model" to name a few variants) but can never find it but i have found some on my tumblr and it bothers me that there is no obvious place to find these models
