This is the first release that previews the new Generic Graphics Library (GEGL) which is built entirely on a node-based system. As such, it already offers a number of improvements:
- 16/32bit per color channel processing
- Basic OpenEXR support
- On-canvas preview for many filters
- Experimental hardware-accelerated rendering and processing via OpenCL
- Higher-quality downscaling
There are many more improvements - check out the full release annoumcement below:

I'll check back later today. It looks like gimp.org has not quite updated their page yet.
Oh, there it is, for Linux. I've downloaded that, & will get a Windows version when it's more stable.
KM, do you mind sharing the link? I don't see where the link for the 2.9 is, only for the 2.8.
Thanks in advance,
DPC
It's further down the page, sort of buried. A "Development snapshot." It reads:
GIMP 2.9.2 is now available at http://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.9/.
KM, thanks a bunch! : )
"...sort of buried." I bet it was!
No wonder!

Excellent news, Gimp and Krita are the core of the 2D work that supports my 3D renders I always look forward to a Gimp update and this one sounds fantastic. The biggest new feature for me at least is the integration of the iwarp tool into the package to make a proper warp tool that works on the image directly, fantastic news going to give this a try!
