Cosmos Laundromat wins Animago Festival "Jury's Prize"

11

Ton traveled to Berlin Postdam in Germany this week to attend the Animago Festival, where Cosmos Laundromat was one of the nominees. Today, they won the "Jury's Prize". Information is still scarce, I'm sure we'll see an update on the project's blog soon :)

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

No, the award is for the "pilot". The jury award is judged based on the following:

Submissions that the Jury finds are successful ideas and/or have an especially
prominent combination of image language and technical realisation.

Whether one likes CL or not, it is hard to argue it is a successful idea or that the technical realisation of the concept imagery isn't spot on.

    • Not sure what CL means, do you mean it got awarded for its technical realism ?
Like the effects used in this movie, such as:
-rendering lot based grass (and also lots of grass).
      - physics of bending grass
      - wool wind effects
      - tornado effects

Or is it about artistic concept
      - A depressed sheep (not so easy to visualize)
      - A refreshing new concept of a story, (art of writing story books).
      - Best promising movie teaser

Or is it about how this came to be
      - a novel way of how it came to be, working with different studios, creating collectively a movie.
      - made by an open-source program, accessible to anyone

Or a price for best tool
      - ea blender the handyman knife for all your CG needs.

I think all above are super astonishing and could result in a price, not sure which.
As at the same time i wonder all the other Blender based short movies (like the one from 2.76 statup splash screen), that have been released with blender, there must be something that sets its apart from those movies. (although one other short Blender movie was mentioned)

      • Benjamin Tolputt on

        CL = "Cosmos Laundromat"

As for exactly why they got the award - I don't know. You'd have to ask them and/or wait for more details. I simply pasted the blurb about what they look for when awarding the Jury Award from the Animago website. I think the points you make have merit, but which (if any) Animago agree with &/or gave the Jury Award for is unknown (here).

FWIW, even though CL isn't something I personally like, it is clearly the best short (technically speaking) the Blender Foundation/Institute has produced. I still think Big Buck Bunny is the best short overall.

        • Bugs bunny was quite good yes.

I think in that area Sintel was maybe better, especially if one keeps in mind it was released before Dreamworks animation "how to train your dragon"

Though my favourite is Tears of Steal, here we saw a first action movie made with Blender, 3D effects mixed inside realworld video.

As for the current project, looking at the men in wool clothes, well that reality is extremely close to for stop-animtion movies; like Wallice and Gromit. (ea in their movie the curse of the were rabit, the hair of Victor Quatermine; at some point becomes pink candyfloss which moves in the wind... now they could have done that animation with blender.

  2. Congratulation Ton and team !! Can't wait for the next chapter of Cosmos Laundromat !!
Congratulation Manuel and team!! great work!1

  3. Congratulations on winning....

Slightly off topic, and this may have been covered somewhere else.

The Internal Blender Engine. I know Cycles is at the forefront of development and BI development has ceased but is there any merit in bringing BI up-to-date (GPU based etc). Are there some features of BI that make it better than Cycles?

Am I right to think that the HUDS in Tears of Steel were done using BI?

  4. Hi Bart,

thanks for sharing the tweets! Also congrats again to the whole team of Cosmos Laundromat. It was great to see movie on a big screen with around 600 people watching it. The reaction of the audience was very good as well.

@Bart: It was in Potsdam not in Berlin. ;)

    Thanks!
