Super Mario Maker

35

Mario is no longer the gawky plumber in Albron's version :)

As Super Mario is celebrating his 30th anniversary and for the release of Super Mario Maker, I thought I should do a little something, a little homage to the famous plumber.

So here's an image I just finished.

The pose is done in Zbrush but all the rest is modelled in Blender.
Rendered with Cycles.

Hope you'll like it.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Is it normal that now I feel the need to sing and dance YMCA? :P

Jokes apart I love the overall style, shading, lighting, rendering.
Beautiful work in all aspects, but not really consistent with our classic beloved Mario character concept.
It looks more like the overused stereotype of a gay steel mill worker.
    Nice work again.

  2. This is a very interesting take on Mario. Somewhat homoerotic but humorous. Do Luigi and Bowser next! Would love to see them. Though Bowser, being a dragon/turtle creature, might not go well with this style.

    Awesome image. Great job!

    • I don't agree, all the rendering was done in Blender, see the description. Many artist use a wide range of tools and I can't put them all in the title :)

      • Artists using different tools has nothing to do with the situation here.
No offence, simply my thoughts on this:
        - this site shows work done in Blender without tags. So naturally when people see something without tag on it [non-Blender] they think its done in Blender
        - main character and a selling point here is a model sculpted and retopoloized in ZBrush, everything else there is to capitalize it.
You wouldn't put a render of some char on ZBrush forum where some cubes and background elements are done with ZBrush while the main char was done with Blender and have a thread titled "char sculpting in ZBrush".

  3. Thanks for sharing your invaluable point of view.
Adding "No offence" at the end of an incredibely rude statement is a somehow a way to place emphasis on the offence.

  4. Hello there,

Well, I'm the creator of this image but I didn't post it there... So it's funny to see people commenting like this. :-)

    Happy with your feedbacks.

Bart, I can understand your postion. But just to be clear, the character had been modelled in Blender entirely. It's posed and resculpt in Zbrush because I prefer sculpting in Zbrush...
The sculpt mode is nice but not (yet) as powerful as Zbrush in my opinion... That's why I'm using Zbrush to pose my men.
But no retopo in Zbrush. :-)

And yes, I'm a gay guy, doing gay erotic art... So, it's normal if there's a gay feeling here... :-)

    Take care,

    Alex

      • Bart, Sorry, the message was basically aimed to Guessi who was explaining his point of view... I mixed up the names, sorry.
And by the way, thanks for posting the image. :-)

  5. Igor, dear Igor... Yes, the dude looks gay. :-) And you're looking at it... And you're commenting on it...
Stop watching those nipples, you bad boy... :-)
In the gay community, we love Russians... We love russian guys with their funny accent, their viril look and those manly eyes... We love russians a lot, Igor... :-D

Igor... Dear Igor... That's a very sexy name by the way, Igor...
    No offence, Dude. :-)

      • Igor,

Stop justifying your homophia by saying that the world is homophobic.
        Russian people don't despise gays...
        Your president does.
        Arab people don't despise gays...
Crazy extremists religious people do... Muslim or christians...

That's my last message to you because this is a thread about a CGI image...

If you have problems with gays, don't come and comment on my work...
But maybe you have problems dealing with the fact that you like watching nipples of big muscular guys... In this case, just ask yourself the right questions and don't come complain here...

        Thanks in advance, :-)

        Alex

        • Alex I think you don't understand a point here, you told Igor to don't comment on your work if he don't like it, but there is a problem with that statement, and that problem is: you are posting your work with sexual content in a public place were sexual involved content is not the target of said place, so even if his point of view is not shared by other people, he is in the right of making such comment, just as you posted your work here in the first place.

Also, homophobia is not a correct term to describe people that dislikes homosexuals, simply because they don't fear gay people, as you said it yourself, it is mostly because religious or political things, and not for fear itself.

Btw I don't dislike gay people, but as I said it previously, if you post your work in a public place, you are subject to public judgement, and you should know that, so simply telling people stopping to complaint is simply hypocritical.

    • Alright, alright. You have your opinion, I have mine. You're right, the post is 'bout CGI. And as I said, the image is (technically) very good if not perfect. As of homophobia, let Time be the judge. PS: don't bark on Putin. Peace.

  6. I'm sorry I turned this into something political.

I was only surprised on the take of this version of Mario and I was wondering if it was something intentional. Thanks to Alex for clearing things out.

    • Oh, there's no problem with me!! :-)
It was as you say to clarify things.
When you don't know why work, you can be surprised to see Mario looking like this. :-)

    Zeto,

First of all and to be clear, I didn't post my image here. Bart did.
But I should have posted it, it's not a problem.

Second point, I didn't say to Igor not to comment my work if he didn't like it. I said to not comment it if he has a problem with gay people. It's something completely different.
I'm open to every critic concerning my images. And I'm also aware that I can face some guys who can have problem with homosexuality, like Igor.

Homophobia is not to fear gay people. :-) You don't have to take the "phobia" literally". Homophobia is disliking gay people.
    And Igor despises gay people...

But Zeto, in the image here, can you show me the sexual content you're mentionning?... I don't see sexual content here.
This Mario can look gay, yes... But there's nothing sexual in this image.
And for your information, sexual content is not permietted here... :-)

What would be your reaction if I had done a black Mario and someone commented saying :
"Great render, great anatomy, great stylish character! But... that skin -- He looks like a black guy. And yeah, the dude looks black. In Russia most people despise black. Including me. No offense."
Would you say that it's his right to despise black people?

As I said, I'm opened to every critic on my images. The composition, the shader, the lighting, etc. I never had any problem with that. But pointing homosexuality as an issue, it's not the point of a 3D forum dedicated to Blender that's why I said to Igor not comment about that if he had problem with homosexuality...

It's not hypocritical, a 3D forum is just not the place to say things like that.

  8. Hi everyone, back on topic now please. Everyone has made their point and I've seen enough homophobia here. Further comments on that topic will be deleted.

  9. Dear Alex,

The musculature of your model is very convincing, but I would like to ask how well it would support being deformed using an armature. In other words, would it perform well in an animation, or does it largely depend on poses being sculpted individually? If a model like yours could be rigged and skinned to look like the individual poses, then the resulting animations would be extremely impressive. Have you tried any experiments along those lines? I imagine animation would be a tall order!

    Marvelous work in any case.

    Regards.

    • Hello Blendertroll,

I've tried to use an armature but I didn't like the result... But I'm not a great technician, and rigging is not really my thing. :-)
However, I'd love to have a very efficent armature which allows to deform the muscles as they flex...
I've seen that it was possible to sculpt shapekeys but it's not working with multires modifiers...

There's also this technic with a shrinkwrap skin enveloping muscle deformed by shapekeys, but it's too technical for me...

Maybe, if my patreon campaign is working well, 'll ask the help of someone to elaborate something to do animation. But for now, I'll stick to images... :-)

      • Thank you for your reply.

The reason that I asked is that I would like to create an animation that features a muscled superhero style character, which of course presents particular challenges with respect to skinning and deformation.

Naturally, many CG sculptures are intended as sculptures only, and (because of their style) are not going to work as models for animation. However, the clean, relatively simple contours in your work somehow suggest that your models could be animated to great effect.

I’m no technical expert either, but the approach I was thinking of would involve creating a displacement map between the base and sculpted mesh, adding the necessary level of subdivision modifiers to the base mesh, and then adding a displacement modifier. With a set up like that, you can still use corrective shape keys on the base mesh itself.

Anyway, just a thought. If you ever decide to try animation, the blender community has a wealth of much more expert blender users who I’m sure would be happy to help.

        • Hi there,

          Sorry for that late answer...

Well, I'd love to be able to animate my characters correctly. Yes, there are solutions to do so and as i'm not into hyper realism, it's easily doable...
But I'm really not good at that. Maybe if my Patreon campaign is going good, I'll try to work with someone on that, and create an efficient rig system able to animate my 3D guys correctly. :-)

          Alex
