A very convincing and detailed design by JoseConseco.

I wanted to share Yamato battle ship that I made to test commercial addon, I scripted for blender -GroupPro. It is bit hard to tell how long it took, because I was modelling, and scripting at same time. But I would guess around 5-6 days.

All made in blender, expert some tiny paint over in 2d software. Water textures were made, generated in filter forge. Most of the weapons were instanced and edited using GroupPro addon, which was created to make it easy working with group-instances.

    • Yamoto was a Japanese battleship during World War II. She and her sister ship the battleship Musashi, were the two most powerful battleships ever built. Yamoto, named after a province in Japan, was commissioned a week after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

She was heavily armored (16 inches of steel on the sides, and the main gun turrets had 26 inches of steel protection) with 9 18.1 inch main guns (the largest on any battleship) and fifty two smaller antiaircraft guns. Although present at a number of naval battles with the US, she only fired her main guns once during the war without sinking any American ships.

By 1945, the Yamoto had 9 18.1 inch main guns and 178 antiaircraft guns; but she was unable to deploy long distances because of fuel shortages. In April 1947, the Yamoto was order to sail to Okinawa and beach herself and fight the American invasion until destroyed. However, on her way to Okinawa, US submarines and carriers spotted her and sank her on April 7, 1945.

Because the Yamoto was so new, she would not have much rust or wear and tear. She would have looked almost new.

By comparison, the US equivalent of Yamoto was the Missouri Class battleship with the USS Missouri being the lead ship in the class. The Missouri also had 16 inch armor protection, but only had 16 inch main guns and lacked the range of Yamoto's 18.1 inch main guns.

The Japanese signed the official documents of surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945; and later mothballed.

Prior to the first Gulf War in 1991, the USS Missouri and the USS Iowa were taken out of mothballs, refurbished and armed with tomahawk missiles. Both ships participated in the Gulf War using both missiles and main 16 inch guns. After the war, both were again mothballed.

The USS Iowa is currently a museum in Los Angeles.

The USS Missouri is currently moored at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and is open to visitors as a museum. She is about 70 years old and still looks in great shape. I was aboard her only last month for my 3rd visit in past few years. You can take a guided tour or wander through the massive ship on your own.

The old battleship is still awe inspiring for her size, beauty, and sense of raw power.

As a side note, when I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam (1969), I had the rare opportunity for the USS New Jersey battleship to provide my unit with naval gun fire support. The 16 inch shells flying overhead sounded like a freight train and its explosive power was terrifying to watch from a distance. I can't imagine being anywhere near a battleship's target. Each shell weighs about 2,700 pounds and had a range of about 23 miles. It was a sight and an experience I'll never forget.
