While this is not the easiest way to achieve such effects, you don't always need the sequence editor for video effects. Dimitris Christou created transitions by hand.
Hello!
Easy image transitions in Blender without using the editor.
See my website for more video tutorials.
The graphicsdaily blog also moves on, close to 150 images now! Blender, Mandelbulb, Apophysis and Gimp used.
Thanks!

What's cool about this technique is that you can add 3D elements in your transitions and you can also animate the camera (slight, smooth motion preferably) as the transition takes place. Thanks Bart!
hi, nice tutorial!
why does he add the subdivision modifier?
thanks,
The build modifier needs geometry with some faces to build it over time while the plane only has one. The subdivision surface modifier adds those faces while the simple option keeps the original frame and shape of the image. You can increase the Subdivision surface modifier to easily get more 'tiles'.
Great use of the Build modifier. Thanks
