Inkscape 0.91's rendering and filters have become significantly faster, and that's only one area that's been improved.
Update: there's some confusion about the status of this release - it doesn't seem to be an 'official' release yet (although the page I'm linking to suggests otherwise).

I think you may have jumped the gun. 0.91 looks like it's a release candidate rather than a released version. The inkscape front page and their download links all refer to 0.48.5 as the latest released version. So watch this (that?) space...
How do you figure that? Looking at the page, it clearly states:
Inkscape 0.91
Released on 2015-01-27
Not a word about it being a release candidate. I'm just faster than their own webmaster %^)
Not so clear I'm afraid. Link is to version you can compile (?) and installers list Pre-Releases 0.91 (1-4). Also Inkscape 0.91 (previously known as 0.49) might be stable, but no-one is claiming that just yet....
This is pre-4:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/3674/
And this the finall version:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/3860/
If you notice there is line saying "(not released yet - AnnouncePlanning091)" in the pre one but there is no such thing in the latest item.
It seems pretty finall to me, and Arch has already included it in official repos.
The Inkscape front page, https://inkscape.org/en/, is still offering 0.48.5.
Definitely jumping the gun. Version 0.91 is not listed as an official release package under the big 'Download' link, yet.
I'm still confused about the status but I've updated the post.
Yay, I just got the windows x64 installer - I've been eagerly awaiting Inkscape's new release for years, and I read it here first! It is all official and is up now. Bart, you're simply too good... although reporting things before they happen sets a rather tough precedent.
Yeah I'm bummed about it too. I received several news submissions about it, and the page looked legit.
OK, the inkscape home page [ https://inkscape.org/en/ ] is now offering 0.91 for download. Binaries are available for some versions of Linux/MacOS/Windows. It looks like they are still building them for the various platforms. (e.g. MacOS 10.7 and later has a binary, MacOS 10.6 still has to wait. Ubuntu has a package, RedHat is on the list, etc.)
Thanks for the update Bob!
I think Bart's real name is Elliot Carver (Tomorrow Never Dies). He reports events before they've even happened! :-)
I wonder when it will appear in ubuntu/mint updates
