Blender used for Kia commercial in Italy

4

Freelancer Alessandro Dalla Fontana landed a project with Kia Italy. Today, he shares his latest commercial and gives us a look behind the scenes of his project.

I'm working like a house production for some advertising agency, in this case InventaCPM of Milan.

My little house production is called like me, generally I work alone but depends on the size of the project, sometime I had some collaborators, we always work on-line, different city and bla bla bla.... For this project I worked alone.

Italian-> English, the speaker on spot said:

Time of "snow white", Kia offering seven free control and you can start in a nanosecond (nano is "dwarf" in italian)-> 7 dwarfs (and snow white) -> 7 control -> really simple message.

The basic idea, text for the speakers and so on is the works of the agency. I did the storyboard, the design of character, ...and all that is bound to the image/video and in this case also the music (...is a mix of 2 music royalty free of Pond5). I worked close to
the art directors of the agency.

KIA_SUMMER

I made the character for a "still" advertising image last summer (screenshot), but the dwarfs were in T-shirt.

In november the client and the agency have decided to do a spot for a web, social, event, etc... for a winter promotion.

I made the entire production in 3 weeks ..the only time that I had. In this time I modelled the new cloths, reworked the rig for animation: character rig is only one x 7 dwarfs with different hair and color eyes, styling hair for every character; I modelled any assets and all other stuff.

The snow terrain is sculpted with Dynotopo for every scene to create foot print and so on, the car is an original model from Kia Motors. All character, assets and car are been linked on the scenes, converted the Armature-Rig to Proxy and animated.

Here's a 'behind the scenes' video:

Blender is a rock, it never crashes, never problem with hair artifact, never flickering... all clothes and shoes of the character are sculpted on a simple mesh subdivide with Multires (...no baking of tex-displacement need). Construct a workflow in Blender is simple and functional.

I render all on 4 Titan Black in more or less 40 hours, In this case no color correction is applied to the footage, all is how to come from the render.

I have years of experience with commercial software (Maya and C4D) but let me said that Blender+Cycles is now one of the best solution for a little studio or freelance.

Thanks for you attention!

Best regard.

  1. PistolIoanAlexandru on

Very impressive work, especially because you worked alone to the whole project.
    Congratulations!!

And yes Blender is very powerful and fast for small projects.
    1. Fast installation.
    2. Fast rendering, with cycle engine integrated.
    3. And all you need in a single package.

In the other side, for big projects Blender has low performance in viewport and simulations.
But good news for viewport in this year: http://www.blender.org/press/18-anticipated-blender-development-projects-of-2015/

  2. Congrats! impressive (and clever) work on the assets, snow sculpting and amazing job with the animation

    Cheers

  3. Bravo Alessandro, è confortante vedere dei lavori come il tuo, in Italia. Una speranza per il nostro incerto futuro! Mi piacerebbe, nel caso fossi interessato, partecipare a un progetto professionale, come quello che ci ha presentato.

Very Good Alessandro, it's good to see works like yours, in Italy. It's a hope for our uncertain future! I'd like to work with you on some professional project, as the one you've showed here.
