Watson

2

Lucasfalcao created this fantastic alien with adorable cats :)

Hi everyone! A long time without post personal stuff here...So, I want to share my last work, It's the first one that I did everything, from the concept until production. I really enjoyed the process and I will do more of this from now on.

The name of this dude is Watson, he lives in a planet very similar to Earth, it's basically the same environment, same animals and almost the same plants. As you can see his favorite animal are the cats, the name of his friends are Agatha, she is the little one sitting on the rock and Vava he is the bigger one, on the legs of Watson. And of course you can presume by his t-shirt that Watson really like broccoli.

This work It's was also the first time I create something using only free and open softwares. For this one I used Ubuntu, Blender and Krita. Blender was used for almost everything and Krita I used for texturing. The image was rendered inside Blender in Cycles.

Credits for the background image Stuart Rankin, image used under the Creative Commons 2.0.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. Maybe some tips.
As i guess your a cat lover, but notice how they draw away attention of the model you like to show. (think about what makes a good composition..) And the cats introduce model quality differences.
What looks a bit strange is the lightning, how come the rock shadows, are different then the main model lightning ?, looks a bit weird to me.
However the weirdest part is an extraterrestrial wearing terrestrial teenager clothing, it only makes sense for a nice kid poster but then maybe that was your goal, in that you succeeded here.

For realism what i like is the floor, in combination with the background, with some other model on it, it could have been a nice cover of a SF book.
